Who are the Advanced Amateur Photo Users

From iqReport by KenRadio
20% of digital camera owners use their digital camera for artistic purposes, for moonlighting job, or to master photography skills, according to a study by Photo Marketing Association. This segment of photo customers is called the advanced amateur or prosumer segment and has been generating much of the business at camera stores around the country for many years. Many advanced amateurs are possible candidates looking to enter the studio photography business at some point, as well. Digital advanced amateur customers were 20% more likely to purchase a camera in 2006. They were also more likely to make that purchase at a camera store when compared to the typical consumer. One important thing to remember when servicing the advanced amateur market is they value top quality in equipment and printing, appreciate the advanced knowledge of photo retail employees. Finally, finding advanced amateur customers is not done through demographics. This segment is comprised of customers of all ages and household types. To reach advanced amateurs, retailers need to look into cross promotions, internet forums, competitions, and events.

by Tameka Kee, Wednesday, May 23, 2007 6:00 AM ET

VODAFONE IS SLATED TO LOWER the price barrier for mobile Web users in Europe this June--with flat fee pricing that will allow them to browse as much as they want from their phone, and create a wealth of opportunity for advertisers.

That announcement was one of a number of industry "tipping points" touted at the Yahoo "Goin' Mobile" Summit, and the message to marketers about the future of mobile advertising was loud and clear--get in now, and do it right!

Consumers Want to Share Camera Phone Pix

Published: 5/8/2007 9:35:07 AM

As the consumer shift toward mobile camera phones becomes more apparent, so does the consumer’s expectations of a sharing service for the images captured on their phones. According to a survey of 500 U.S. consumers conducted by mobile imaging technology provider Ontela, consumers are frustrated by the difficulty in accessing their camera phone pictures and putting them to use.

Ontela ran a test to determine users’ ability to transfer photos from their camera phone to a popular online photo sharing service, and a whopping 75 per cent were unable to accomplish the task using their current phone!

The Seattle, WA-based company reported that 40 per cent of respondents said they would consider changing wireless service providers if the new carrier offered a seamless photo sharing experience. Eighty-six per cent said they would search for a carrier-based photo sharing service that offered a “seamless, click-free sharing experience”; and 90 per cent expressed interest in a service that would let them upload images to the PC. Surprisingly, many also said they’d have no issues paying for the service.

Ontela says this leaves the door open for carrier-based photo sharing services that could deliver images to the PC, as well as popular photo sharing Websites like Windows Live Spaces, Facebook, Snapfish and Flickr. Although 87 per cent said they would want to upload camera phone pictures to a photo sharing Website, there was no single destination unanimously selected.

Still, Ontela discovered that mobile phone data feature usage remains low outside of standard text messaging: over 80 per cent of those surveyed said they don’t use MMS or Internet browsing; and two-thirds noted that they had never purchased games or photo wallpapers for their handsets. Nearly half of respondents claimed that camera functionality was not part of the buying decision for their current handset, but 85 per cent said they’d prefer that their next phone include a camera.

The survey was conducted online, and consisted primarily of respondents between the ages of 18-49. The sample was representative of a wide range of income and education levels and demographics.

Life’s blurred without camera phone

TIMES NEWS NETWORK
[ FRIDAY, MAY 04, 2007 12:21:27 PM]
Despite the palpable dependence on wireless, hype of convergence and the constant highlighting of the camera-in-mobile or walkman-in-mobile features, techno-dependency on either of these features is surely not life-impacting . More than 50% respondents agreed they would still get by in life without these features. Nevertheless, 32% respondents in the 18-25 age-group see a blurred life without camera and 29% in the same age-group felt life would be hard with a mobile phone sans music.

75% of UK mobile phones feature a camera

75% of UK mobile phones feature a camera

According to a survey by M:Metrics, the mobile market authority, over 50% of US mobile phone users now have a camera phone, representing a total of 106 million phones, while in the UK 75% of mobile phones have a camera.

The boom in camera phones has led to a fall in sales of mobile wallpaper and graphics, with consumers personalising their phones with photos taken on the device.

However camera phone technology has had a positive impact on overall operator data revenues, with consumers increasingly purchasing photo messaging bundles.
